First Click

Â鶹Éç One's smash hit genealogy series Who Do You Think You Are? is encouraging computer novices to go online and research their own genealogy as part of the Â鶹Éç's First Click campaign.

The series delves deep into celebrity family ancestry, uncovering a host of hidden pasts and shock revelations.

Larry Lamb presents three fascinating films, available on the Â鶹Éç's Red Button, in which experts explain how viewers new to computers can use some of the key resources available to the amateur family historian.

Each film features examples and stories from the current series highlighting how passenger lists, birth, marriage and death certificates; census returns, Army Service records, foreign records and Poor Law records can all be accessed online.

A special family history guide for new computer users offering advice, tips and encouragement to get online is available at bbc.co.uk/firstclick and at venues running the popular First Click beginners courses.

Reel History

The Reel History of Britain retells the fascinating stories about how life in Britain used to be, through the film collections of the British Film Institute and other National and Regional Film Archives.

The Â鶹Éç Two series will focus on a different aspect of British life, highlighting the hardships and simple pleasures, as well as the enormous social changes that took place from the 1900s onwards.

Each film explores how ordinary British people worked, loved and lived in the 20th century, as seen through social documentaries, tourist information films, newsreels, and government propaganda films.

These films have now been carefully restored by Britain's film archives and are available to be seen again for the first time in generations. They showcase the people and places of Britain; their preoccupations, lifestyles and ambitions for the future. They reveal a forgotten Britain that has since changed forever.

Good selection this week for Freeviewers so thank you.

Time to merge Ceefax page 697 TV Only material with Ceefax page 283 and/or Ceefax page 698 now that by the end of 2012 all UK television broadcasts will have switched to digital transmission. The Â鶹Éç provided the Â鶹Éç Digital site as part of a wider campaign providing information and advice for viewers who needed to upgrade their TVs in order to receive digital transmissions. But no more!
