What does ‘friend’ mean to you?

Description

Numerous views from children on what they think a friend is, how they should behave towards each other, be it caring, trusting or playing and what they would like in a friend.

Classroom Ideas

The word ‘friend’ could be written on the board and students asked what this word means to them. Their responses could form a mind map full of ideas on friendship. Students could be asked to consider whether they think friends are important. What would the world be like without friends? Students should develop an understanding of the positive impact that friendships can have on our wellbeing.

Alternatively, students could take part in a circle time activity in which they are asked to describe what they think makes a really good friend or a best friend. They could use all of the ideas presented here to make a recipe for a good friend which lists all of the attributes needed. A picture of a large mixing bowl could be drawn, into which students could add pictures of each of these attributes in action.
