What makes a good peer mediator?

Description

A teacher asks her pupils what skills they think they need to be a good peer mediator. These include understanding feelings, not taking sides, knowing how to help and how to listen. Children applying to become peer mediators are trained and learn the process through role-play.

Classroom Ideas

Explain the role of a peer mediator to students, and ask them to take part in a circle time activity similar to that in the clip, where they describe what they believe would make a good peer mediator. They could use these ideas to create a job advert for the role which describes the skills, knowledge and attributes needed.

Students could then complete applications for this role and be interviewed. The members of the class who are not successful in gaining a role as peer mediator could become trainers, and take part in role-play activities like those in the clip. Students could consider the benefits of a peer mediation system in their school, and could write a persuasive letter to the headteacher to encourage them to set up such a system.
