Measuring temperature using a thermometer

Description

A demonstration of how to measure the air temperature using a thermometer. There are temperature differences between day and night, and the temperature varies between shade and full sunshine. We can describe the temperature as being hot, mild, chilly or freezing.

Classroom Ideas

After viewing the clip, students could make posters with instructions on how to use a thermometer and how to read one correctly. Where do you think the warmest place in the building is? Where is the coolest place? Students could go on to use thermometers to measure the temperature in various locations, at different times of the day. Do their results bear out their predictions? Students could present their results as bar charts or line graphs. Students could work out the difference between the highest and lowest temperatures recorded and also the average temperature for the day. Students could calculate temperature conversions between Celsius and Fahrenheit and vice versa. They could memorise a handy set of equivalent temperatures in Celsius and Fahrenheit, too.
