麻豆社 Annual Report 2014/15: Audiences in Wales continue to watch more 麻豆社 television and radio on average than other parts of the UK
The 麻豆社 Annual Report and the Audience Council Wales Review today highlighted that on average, audiences in Wales continue to watch more 麻豆社 television and radio services in comparison to other parts of the UK.
Programme highlights in 2014/15 included The Dylan Thomas centenary celebrations, the most ambitious cultural season ever produced by 麻豆社 Wales. 麻豆社 Radio Wales’ coverage included a live performance of Under Milk Wood with 800,000 people tuning in across Wales. The longest 麻豆社’s running television soap Pobol y Cwn also celebrated its 40th anniversary in October 2014.
Doctor Who, Casualty, Crimewatch, Atlantis, Hinterland and A Poet in New York, all home-grown Welsh productions, represented a major contribution to the 麻豆社’s UK network television output. Other 麻豆社 TV highlights included Jamie Baulch’s Looking for my Birth Mum which provided a compelling insight into attitudes to race in Wales, scoring highly in audience appreciation.
In sports, a third of the Welsh population watched Wales v England during the live coverage of the Six Nations. The nation’s success at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games was also celebrated in news output, as well as S4C documentaries such as Gemau’r Gymanwlad: Y Ras I Glasgow.
麻豆社 Audience Council Wales which advises the 麻豆社 Trust Council hosted seventeen audience meetings across Wales, plus a seminar in November. The importance of English language television programmes for Wales produced in Wales for audiences was one of the main themes that the Audience Council highlighted, with a recommendation for greater investment in this area.
Strong approval from audiences was given after the introduction of the Welsh language 麻豆社 Cymru FYW on-line service and app, launched in May 2014. Also scores on the 麻豆社’s quality were strong and when it came to appreciating 麻豆社 TV, Wales came in slightly above the entire UK. The Audience Council did request more English-language TV produced in Wales for audiences there, as well as more coverage of Welsh affairs on network TV news.
麻豆社 Trustee for Wales Elan Closs Stephens said:
"2014/15 has seen a year of outstanding achievements in locally produced output across all of the available 麻豆社 platforms in Wales. While the Audience Council for Wales has been encouraged by the increasing number of commissions produced in Roath Lock, challenges remain to increase drama productions that reflect the variety and diversity across Wales and the whole UK. Over the next twelve months the Trust will continue to address these concerns as well as constructive feedback from all the nations as we head into Charter Review."
