50:50's successful methodology has been extended to include other diversity metrics beyond gender. In Autumn 2020 we launched monitoring of disabled contributors and contributors from ethnic minority backgrounds in 麻豆社 content.
How does it work?
The extension of the 50:50 methodology to other diversity measures aligns to our three core principles.
The approach is just as adaptable as our system to track gender representation. We work with each individual team to agree the metrics applicable to their particular content and workflow.
Some teams collect simplified data on the overall representation of ethnic minority and/or disabled contributors. Others collect more detailed data, breaking the categories down further intro groups that are relevant to that output鈥檚 target audience demographic. This data is not reported to 50:50 The Equality Project, but is used by the team to better inform their editorial decisions.
The majority of teams are continuing to monitor by perception, relying on any publicly-disclosed information about a contributor. In certain cases where content-makers have direct access to every contributor, they will record how contributors self-identify with the use of diversity forms.
The methods for monitoring and data capture comply with UK Data Protection Law.

The 麻豆社 will publish how many teams sign up to start monitoring ethnicity and disability representation as part of our 2021 Impact Report. And we'll update on our progress in 2022.
50:50 is extending this opportunity to our partner organisations too, inspiring wider media and communications content that fairly reflects our world.
In 2021 we will also develop measures to begin tracking socio-economic diversity in our content.
