Roy Jenkins' guest this week is one of the most prolific of contemporary Christian songwriters.

In any poll of popular worship songs, Graham Kendrick is likely to see at least one of his works featured - and often more. It's reckoned that Shine, Jesus, Shine, or one of his hundreds of other compositions, is being sung somewhere around the world just about every hour of every day.

He's ranked by some alongside the hymn writers Isaac Watts and Charles Wesley, but he's also a favourite target for those who write off most contemporary Christian music - 'king of the happy clappy banalities,' said one columnist, 'the nation's pre-eminent churner-outer of evangelical bilge.' He was not an enthusiast.

Ahead of a visit to Wales this week - sharing a platform with the American preacher Tony Campolo on behalf of the charity Compassion - Graham Kendrick talks about his life and the importance of music.
