Peter Baker's guest in All Things Considered this week (Sunday 23 May, 8:30am) is an American author, activist and speaker who is one of the architects of a community called The Simple Way.

Shane Claiborne, regarded by some as "the coolest saint on the planet", and named by a leading men's magazine as "one of the rebels changing the world" is part of a movement known as New Monasticism and has a message which surprises some and irritates others.

Inspired as a student both by frustration at the church he saw around him and by a vision of the counter-cultural Church to which he dreamed of belonging, Shane Claiborne's journey has taken him from the bible belt of Tennessee to inner city Philadelphia via Calcutta. Along the way his experiences of living with lepers, the poor and the homeless have helped shape his view of contemporary Christianity about which he's been talking during a visit to Wales this week.
