At 33, Trystan Owain Hughes was an active sportsman, loved going to the cinema, and travelled the world.
Suddenly his life changed dramatically when he was hit by acute pain, and diagnosed with a degenerative spinal condition. He was warned that things were unlikely to improve.
His story is far from unique - many other active young people have been forced to make what they can of their lives after some terrible calamity.
Very few, however, can have gone on to reflect on what they've been through, and produce a book intended to help those wrestling with their own afflictions - all within four years of that initial diagnosis.
Trystan Owain Hughes, Anglican chaplain at Cardiff University and son of a North Wales vicar is the author of Finding Hope and Meaning in Suffering which is out this week, published by SPCK.
