Easter garden

Gardens of Faith

Last updated: 04 April 2010

As churches across the country recreate scenes of Holy Week and Easter with imaginative use of flowers and greenery All Things Considered (Sunday 4 April at 8.30am, repeated Thursday, 8 April at 5.30am) ; takes a look at gardens and their use in the Bible.

Gardens of all sorts can have rich spiritual significance. Even if we're not at all certain about being 'nearer God's heart in a garden than anywhere else on earth', in the much quoted words of the poet Dorothy Frances Gurney, the fact is that they can be places where life can be put in perspective, and connections may be made which can be missed elsewhere. Not least, connections to key moments in the Bible's story.

Roy Jenkins hears about the Quiet Garden Movement which enencourages the use of gardens as places for restful contemplation and prayer, and from various people for whom gardens, allotments and contact with nature provide an inspiration and a backdrop for their faith.
