All Things Considered: Henry Olonga

Henry Olonga

On 'All Things Considered' this week (Sunday 24 May at 8.30am, repeated on Wednesday 27 May at 6.30pm), Roy Jenkins' guest is a sportsman who for a short time helped focus international outrage at the policies of Robert Mugabe.

Henry Olonga is the first black cricketer to have played for Zimbabwe. Six years ago, at the start of the Cricket World Cup, he and team mate Andy Flower wore black armbands - to mourn, they said, the death of democracy in their country. The protest enraged the authorities, effectively ended his international career and for a while put his life in danger.

Both men now live in Britain. Andy Flower is director of the England cricket team; Henry Olonga, with his distinctive tenor voice, is carving out a new career in musical theatre, taking part in many arts festivals, and he's released a contemporary pop album.

Next month he will be in Wales meeting school pupils and speaking at a range of special events, sharing his music and the Christian faith which inspires him.
