On 'All Things Considered' this week (Sunday 26 April at 8.30am, repeated on Wednesday 29 April at 6.30pm), there is another chance to hear Roy Jenkins' interview with a Welsh-trained surgeon who has spent the past twenty two years restoring deformed faces in some of the poorest countries in the world.

Californian Dr. Gary Parker has done it all from a ship, where he lives with his wife and children. And like his colleagues on board, he has to pay for the privilege of serving the poor.

Gary Parker is chief medical officer of Africa Mercy, and was attracted to the Mercy Ships mission during his five years at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd at Bodelwyddan. His church in Rhyl supported him financially - and two decades later is still doing so.

Africa Mercy is currently in Liberia; and while much of the surgery takes place on board, ship-based teams also work in a local hospital and in healthcare, agricultural and sanitation projects. The programme has recently been shortlisted for the prestigious Sandford St. Martin awards for religious broadcasting.
