Dr Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury
Dr Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury
On All Things Considered this week, (Sunday 8 March at 8.30am, repeated Wednesday 11 March at 6.30pm), Roy Jenkins' guest is the Archbishop of Canterbury.
The Most Rev Dr Rowan Williams is the first Welshman to fill the chair of Augustine for at least a thousand years. After a glittering academic career, he had been Bishop of Monmouth and Archbishop of Wales, but the move to Lambeth in 2002, projected him into a different stratosphere - a significant figure of state, and leader of the world's 77 million Anglicans.
As the youngest Archbishop of Canterbury in two centuries, he carried many expectations of a dazzling new age for his church - unrealistic expectations in fact, even for a man of his charisma and commitment: the worldwide Anglican Communion remains grievously split over sexuality. He's both loved and lampooned.
On his travels, he meets some of the planet's poorest people face to face. He speaks passionately on great global issues, and maintains a steady flow of scholarly works. And he regularly finds time to return to Wales. This weekend sees him back here for two events which reflect a little of the breadth of his concern: a lecture on ethics, economics and global justice, and the anniversary of a Christian organisation which offers a new start to young people just out of prison.
