Painter Karel Lek
On All Things Considered this week (Sunday 25 January at 8.30am, repeated Wednesday 28 January at 6.30pm), Peter Baker travels to the delightful town of Beaumaris on the Menai Straits to meet the artist Karel Lek.
He was born in Antwerp in 1929 and from there he fled with his Jewish family to Britain during the Second World War. They finally settled in Bangor and, for much of his life, Beaumaris has been the place that Karel Lek has called home.
In a career spanning more than fifty years, he has dedicated himself to capturing the people and landscape of this beautiful corner of Wales. His work has been exhibited and acclaimed in public and private galleries around the world. And alongside his more traditional subjects, Karel Lek has also on occasions, turned his attention to religious themes. His depictions of the crucifixion have been regarded by some as controversial and by others as inspirational.
