All Things Considered: St.Beuno's Ignatian Spirituality Centre

St.Beuno's Ignatian Spirituality Centre

'Getting away from it all' can be a very attractive proposition: no televisions or computers, no phones or demanding schedules. There's often a problem, however. Even if we can leave behind the claims of work and family, we can never escape ourselves.

For All Things Considered this week (Sunday 17 November 17th at 8.30am, repeated on Wednesday 19 November at 6.30pm) Roy Jenkins visits a community where this fact is taken very seriously. St.Beuno's Ignatian Spirituality Centre at Tremeirchion, near St.Asaph, is in the business of helping visitors to discover themselves.

Guests arrive from all over the world, for courses and retreats which last between a single day and three months.

St.Beuno's was established as a theological college for the Roman Catholic Society of Jesus in the 1840s. The poet Gerard Manley Hopkins was its most celebrated resident - he produced some of his best-known work here.

Roy Jenkins hears about his continuing legacy, and meets, as well as the resident staff, a Nigerian missionary to Argentina and a parish priest from Tasmania who reflect on the way St.Beuno's has helped to shape their ministries.
