Liverpool Hope Uni / Catalyst
In "All Things Considered" this week (Sunday 29 June at 8.30am, repeated Wednesday 2 July at 6.30pm) for Radio Wales' special season celebrating Liverpool's year as European Capital of Culture we meet the man who runs one of Britain's newest universities in the city - described as the "only ecumenical foundation of its kind in Europe".
Liverpool Hope University is a unique institution, formed under the inspiration of two of the city's most celebrated church leaders, the Anglican Bishop David Shepherd and the Catholic Archbishop Derek Warlock. It grew out of three teacher training colleges, now has 7,500 students, and there's nowhere quite like it in Europe - earlier this month it hosted an eight- day global youth congress on creating a humane world society and achieving integrity in public life.
Prof. Gerald Pillay became Vice Chancellor four and a half years ago. His family originating in India, he was brought up in South Africa and taught in universities there and in New Zealand before moving to Liverpool. He talks to Roy Jenkins about the struggles of living in apartheid South Africa, the significance of education as liberation, and how faith helped him combat despair.
Also in the programme Roy hears about a major celebration of Christian life which will draw large numbers of Anglicans from the diocese of St.David's to the Carmarthen Showground on Saturday, 5th July.
"Catalyst" will bring together young and old from churches in Carmarthen, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire in a packed day which includes everything from music workshops and paintballing to The Gospel According to the Simpsons, seminars on a range of contemporary issues, and worship in five different styles.
