Stations of the Cross / Self denial during Lent

It is still early days in Lent - but how are you doing with that commitment not to eat chocolate, to avoid alcohol or to cut back on the gossip?

This week, two Senior Anglican Bishops have urged people to cut their carbon footprint for Lent. A trendy gimmick? Or a meaningful response?

On All Things Considered this week (Sunday 10 February at 8.31am, repeated on Wednesday 13 February at 6.32pm), Peter Baker and a panel of guests explore the meaning of Lent and the relevance of self denial.

In a culture which tends to encourage personal indulgence, self denial can often seem a rather quaint idea. But is it in fact, an essential preparation for Easter? And if it is such a good spiritual discipline, shouldn't we be denying ourselves for life and not just for 40 days!

Also in the programme we meet artist Toddy Hoare. He has been an army officer, a parish priest and enjoyed a life long passion for his work as a sculptor. An exhibition of his bronze panels depicting the Stations of the Cross has just gone on display in the Chapel at St Michaels Theological College Llandaff.
