Iran / Homeless banquet

On All Things Considered this week (Sunday 20 January at 8.31am, repeated Wednesday 23 January at 6.32pm) Roy Jenkins meets Jane Harries, co-clerk of the Bridgend Quaker meeting who has just returned from a trip to Iran.

It is a country rarely out of the headlines since George W. Bush made it part of his infamous axis of evil.

It is accused of sponsoring terrorism, and has defied international objections to its nuclear programme, insisting that its ambitions are peaceful.

It can be very easy to regard such a country as simply enemy territory, and to ignore its people - which is one reason why Jane Harries has spent some time there recently.

Also, this week a banquet was taking place in the hall of St Peter's Catholic church, in Roath, near the centre of Cardiff, but it was being run by members of St Denys, the Anglican parish church in the suburb of Lisvane several miles away.

A team from St Denys regularly joins members of many other Cardiff churches in the Paradise Run, which offers food and blankets to the city's homeless people.

Why not give them a real treat, someone suggested, let them feel they're being treated to a real banquet, with the best food and proper waiters and all the trimmings. All Things Considered was there to find out how it went.
