Save the Family

In All Things Considered this week (Sunday 16 December, 8.31am, repeated Wednesday 19 December, 6.32pm) there's another chance to hear a programme first broadcast a year ago and which was recently short listed in the Jerusalem Radio Awards.

Roy Jenkins visits a place in Flintshire which captures a unique sense of the spirit of this season. Plas Bellin Hall looks like a comfortable country house hotel but is, in fact, a refuge for a lot of people who without it would be pretty desperate at Christmas.

It is 30 years since Edna Speed initiated the work which led to Save the Family, a charity which has served literally thousands of homeless people in north east Wales and the north west of England.

Roy meets the founder, Edna Speed, together with some of the residents and staff, who believe that the nativity story speaks directly to the changing face of homelessness today.
