Still recovering from an attempt on his life, he had won hearts across Britain, and the visit to Cardiff was an enthusiastic carnival of a climax, with a huge mass at Pontcanna Fields and a youth gathering at Ninian Park which had all the fervour - and the volume - of a pop concert.

A quarter of a century on, we hear from people touched by that day -among them the 16 year old who is now a prison chaplain, the boy of 11 whose solo flute was heard by millions, and the priest who organised the stewards and is now a bishop.

They reflect on what it meant to them then, and the extent to which being part of that historic event has left a mark on them.
