I'm depressed...
It's a familiar response. We've had a bad day at work, our football team has blown its chances, and an overflowing washing machine has flooded our freshly decorated kitchen.
'I'm depressed,' we snarl. We're not, of course: we're miserable, frustrated, fed up. Being clinically depressed is something else altogether. More than 120 million people suffer from this condition and according to the World Heath Organisation the illness is one of the leading causes of disability - and it's on the increase.
In this Depression Awareness Week we ask what exactly is this condition, why is it getting worse and what is the particular response from faith communities?
Joining Roy Jenkins to explore these issues are two people who know the experience from the inside - Elaine Brown, a former missionary in Africa and author of Living With Depression? and Tony Millin who combines writing and performing comedy with a career in radiotherapy physics.
Roy is also joined by two professionals in this field - Chris Scott, a psychologist, therapist and Anglican priest in London who's written a self-help book Lifting the Lid on Depression, and Dr. David Enoch, a Consultant Psychiatrist and a lay preacher, and his most recent book is I Want A Christian Psychiatrist.
Books mentioned in the programme:
- Living With Depression? by Elaine Brown (Christian Focus, )
- Lifting the Lid on Depression by Chris Scott (Exposure Publishing)
- I Want A Christian Psychiatrist by Dr. David Enoch (Monarch Books, )
