Forest Farm
Tucked away near the M4 in north Cardiff is this 150 acre reserve which straddles the River Taff.
Its river banks and woodland habitats are a haven in the suburban wilderness, providing all that herons, kingfishers, sparrowhawks, coal tits, snipes and dragonflies need.
The multitude of species that can be viewed from the on-site hides include the little grebe, little egret, water rail, dipper, nuthatch, greater spotted woodpecker, long tailed tit, whitethroat, buzzard and tree creeper.
Of course many of the more well-known species are birds, but a healthy population of insects also inhabit the reserve.
There's a range of dragonfly and damselfly species as well as many butterflies and moths.
