Itchy Feet

By William Ponissi
March 2007, Cardiff
A digital story from Capture Wales

"My destiny is written in my name.

When my parents decided, quite unusually for an Italian family, to call me William, my future was being set.

It was the first of many signs that were telling me I was meant for somewhere distant from my own country.

I always loved geography. I was fascinated by capital cities, flags and anthems. In my room there were maps everywhere. I used to stand in front of them pretending to be a teacher to my granny.

She had never travelled at all, and had no clue about where small, newborn states were. We still remember fondly how seriously I scolded her every time she made a mistake.

Mum and dad soon set me on the right path. My first long trip, to London, came when I was six, and from that moment, I never looked back.

When I started going abroad alone, at 12, I realised Italy was too small a place for me. I needed more. So I got myself on the way.

Working as a volunteer in big sport events for people with a learning disability, I toured Europe. I started taking up foreign languages, the more the better. I went from the dunes of Ireland to the European parliament in Brussels, from Nordkapp to the Netherlands. But what I wanted was to live abroad.

I went North, South, East and West, looking for a place to call my own. I met different people. I got to know distant cultures. I found love on the way.

Now that I'm in Wales, I don't know how long I'll stay.

I've already lived in four countries, but when you have got itchy feet like mine, you can't really make plans for the future. On the road again.

This is my way to fulfil the destiny written in my name."

Please tell us a little about yourself.
I'm a 24 year old journalism student from Italy. I moved to Wales in September 2006, and I love to travel, learn new languages and meet different people. I love sports as well, both as a participant and as a fan.

What's your story about?
My story is about my love for travels, and how this passion was instilled in me by my parents since I was born. I think it was written in my destiny that I would have had itchy feet forever, that I would have always gone around restlessly.

Why did you choose to tell this particular story?
I chose this topic as I wanted to portray what I consider the most important aspect of my personality: I think being a traveller, being in constant contact with different people and cultures and seeing new places is what really makes me the person I am nowadays, it's what builds the real myself. I wanted this story to be a representation of what I feel is "me".

What did you find most rewarding about the workshop?
I loved the idea that everyone has a story to tell, no matter who they are, their walk of life or their dreams. Each one of us came from different paths, and each one of us came with a story. Obviously, I found very interesting to learn the technical sides of story-making - and this whole experience gave me a lot of ideas for future stories that I'd like to make for my family and friends.
