For Amy

By Tina Jones
June 2004, Mid Wales
A digital story from Capture Wales

Colourful pictures and memories.

As Tina sits under a special tree, all the memories of her friendship with Amy come flooding back.

"Dear Amy,
I've just realised that we've been friends for 25 years. As I sit here under our tree all the memories and pictures come flooding back - so vivid and colourful, as if it were only last week. From our first meeting at our high-school lunch breaks - me, the new girl and you and your friends, the cool kids - hanging out at the picnic tables. Long hair, acoustic guitars - I just knew I had to be a part of it.

We got talking about Led Zeppelin and found that we both had stories to tell. That was it, our lives were linked forever.

We decided that one day we'd go travelling to Wales on the trail of Bronyraur - the cottage from Led Zeppelin legend.

Seven years later, we had our adventure although I was looking for hobbits rather than rock stars by that time. It was a life-changing trip and we both got more than we bargained for. We got to meet Robert and I fell in love with Wales, Mrs. Jones' son and the landscape... and today, this is still my home.

In the years since, we have lived our own little lives and even though the distance between us is vast, we've always kept in touch.

The special relationship we have built with my daughter Tessa by passing down our story is a precious gift.

Thank you Amy for special gifts you have gave me - your friendship, your strength, courage and inspiration. I knew we'll always be there for one another come what may. We are feathers in the wind."

Pease tell us a little about yourself.
I am an American in 'exile'! I grew up and went to school in different countries, was never quite sure where I really belonged, always in search of that elusive place I felt like 'home'.

What's your story about?
It's about the time I left home - moved back to Maryland - and met the special friends that have become my lifetime companions, especially my dear Amy! It's a little thank-you to the bravest person I've ever met. Battling illness and enduring incredible pain, she has been an inspiration to me, staying strong and focused and got through the 'why me?' to become the genuinely beautiful, shining person that she is today.

What did you find most rewarding about the workshop?
The fantastic team that helped me make a moving story from an idea, which enabled me to show my gratitude to one of my dearest friends.

Your comments

"I hope that my friends and I will still be as close as those two are after college... even with an ocean in between." Kate, Rockville, USA, Sept 2007.

"Brilliant ... beautiful ... lovely. I want to go to Wales! I love your friendship story, and as Amy's sister, I know that the feeling is mutual. Tina, you have done so much for my sister Amy. Please know that 'your American friends' or rather, 'your American Family' loves you very much!" Kathy, Maryland, USA, Sept 2007.

"What a beautiful story! Tina and Amy are truly special friends. The pictures are beautiful and the narrative warm and sincere." Terry, Rockville, USA, Sept 2007.
