Chris Thomas: Wanted! The Jamie Oliver of farming

Wanted! The Jamie Oliver of farming

By Chris Thomas
September 2007, Gilestone Farm, Brecon

"In the corner of the Brecon hillside a brief encounter with a very rare breed ... a family run farm. Gilestone has made attempts to diversify, but is it too late for many others?

Mother of five Chris Thomas looks at the diminishing number of farms in the country and the current outbreak of foot and mouth. She places the blame firmly with the government and makes a plea to the nation to find the Jamie Oliver of farming, "Someone to do for farming what he's done for school dinners."

"If this happened in France the people would be flooding the streets of Paris in protest. In the future farmers could be living in little tiny huts down in St Fagan's museum saying this is what used to help our country and run our country and feed our country. Because we will be a spectacle, we will be a source of amusement and entertainment - a rare breed. And the only way we can stop the rare breeds is by getting off our backsides and making people notice."

"Was thinking the other day that we should make more vegetarian choices for our schools dinners." Karyanne.
