Director Charles Palmer and the production team of Smith And Jones, the adventure which introduced the Doctor to student doctor Martha Jones, made several night time visits to Market Street in Pontypridd to get the material that they needed to form the end of the tale.
On the first visit on Monday 14 August 2006, afternoon work on the hospital scenes was being followed by the night shoot at the alleyway with the Doctor showing Martha his TARDIS, which also required a brief appearance of Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Tish, Martha's sister, alongside David Tennant and Freema Agyeman. For various reasons, part of a revised version of this scene was then re-recorded the following month in the same venue, now without the appearance of Tish, but with the crew of Doctor Who Confidential present.
All the sequences with the rest of Martha's family for the episode were then recorded with a later production block, and so the sequence with Annalise storming out of the pub was recorded at the end of Monday 2 October, with the Market Tavern Hotel (now the Blueberry Hotel and Grill) on Market Street featuring as the bar itself.
Market Street played host to the Doctor Who team again over a year later when it was the ideal venue to represent London during the Daleks' assault in The Stolen Earth. Director Graeme Harper and his team scheduled their night shoot for these exciting sequences set on the relocated planet on Wednesday 12 March 2008.
Returning to the series as Rose Tyler, Billie Piper was the focus of the action as law and order broke down on the city streets. The Blueberry Hotel and Grill was now disguised as an underground station, while the shop Computing Wales was rechristened Megabyte City for the scene where Rose confronted the looters.
Onlookers were treated to fireball explosions being detonated in the background, and stunt performer James O'Dee driving a sun-roofed car through the panicking mob.
Episode synopsis: Smith And Jones
Medical student Martha Jones is confused when a man who took his tie off in the street in front of her on the way to the Royal Hope Hospital that morning turns up as one of her patients minutes later and denies ever having seen her. But this is nothing compared to the entire hospital being relocated to the surface of the Moon prior to the arrival of the alien police-for-hire, the Judoon.
Episode synopses: The Stolen Earth/Journey's End
Warned of terrible events by Rose Tyler, the Doctor and Donna Noble return to Earth in the TARDIS just as the entire planet is teleported away, becoming one of a number of missing worlds transported to the Medusa Cascade. Aided by his former travelling companions, the Doctor discovers that the Daleks are behind the terrible events, and again comes face to face with the alien's creator - the scientist Davros.
