All sorts of everyday household objects can make sounds that are fascinating to babies.

Why not try a little noisy play with them - describe all the sounds you make together to introduce them to new words.

Benefits of noisy play with baby

  • Noisy play stimulates babies' senses - this is how babies begin to make sense of the world around them. It will help encourage them to explore the world through play.
  • It helps them to learn the words for sounds like 'bang', 'crackle' and 'noisy' as well as 'loud' and 'quiet'.
  • It can develop your baby's sense of rhythm, which is great for their language learning as they listen to the rhythm of words' syllables.
  • Banging on things, crunching and crackling them helps to develop their gross and fine motor skills.
  • Taking turns making a sound can help them learn about the back and forth of conversation.

Ideas for noisy play with baby

All sorts of things can be used for noisy sensory play with your baby, whether it's a noisy toy, bells, pots and pans, alarm clocks or even just some nice rippable, scrunchable newspaper.

Try taking turns with them, saying 'mummy/daddy's turn' and 'baby's turn'. Use words to describe the sound like 'bang', 'ding', 'rip' and 'loud/quiet'.

When you make a noise, wait for your baby to respond with a sound or gesture. If your baby babbles, copy the babbling noises they make back to them.
