The Rangers and Volunteers have managed to create a mosaic of habitats which has in return increased the diversity of wildlife.

It is comprised of mixed tree species, hedgerows, scrub, and rough grassland with an interesting and varied range of wildflowers.

A wetland corridor of fifteen interconnected ponds and marshland provides an important habitat for wildfowl and amphibians.

When asked if any out of the ordinary animals or insects have been found Countryside Ranger Paul Murphy told us a couple of years ago they did find a Burmese Python in the woods:

"People buy some weird and wonderful pets but soon find out they cannot look after them.

"Someone must have come down and let it loose in the woods. It was lucky we did find it.

"The python鈥檚 natural habitat is tropical, it would not have survived our climate."

The Friends of Guisborough Forest & Walkway are actively involved in running the site, carrying out regular conservation tasks and running events including the annual Guisborough Forest Festival.

Their fund-raising has resulted in many improvements, including the new Trim Trail. This is a green exercise activity encouraging people to keep fit.

Paul said:

听鈥淲oodlands are there to be enjoyed by people, and the community has a stake in them.

"We are very keen to bring the woodland areas right up to date, so that as well as maintaining the area鈥檚 rich natural heritage and environment, we also make them relevant to people today."
