The first rule tells us that if the root word ends in two consonants you make no changes.
Giving the example of adding 'ation' to 'inform' and giving us 'information'.
Rule 2 tells us that when the root word ends in a consonant followed by an 'e', such as 'invite', the 'e' is removed before adding the suffix, giving us 'invitation'.
Finally rule 3 helps us remember that when the word ends in a consonant followed by a 'y', you must change the 'y' to an 'i' before adding the suffix. Using the example of the word 'very' becoming 'variation'.
