Video summary

Mechanical engineer Abbie Hutty helps a team of children to research, design and make a portable bird hide for children to use at a local nature reserve.

They research the main features of a bird hide and a range of other temporary structures and discuss the pros and cons of the different shapes and the materials used for their design.

They construct models and test the properties of different fabrics, before making a prototype.

They then invite the Ranger, together with some young birdwatchers, to give their feedback.

This clip is from Design Challenge, a series in which groups of children tackle some difficult creative projects with the help of talented young engineers.
