This Barnsley boy came to Radio Sheffield in 1967 and went on to be Controller of 麻豆社 Radio 4. Read his memories of Radio Sheffield.

:: Michael Green
Producer, 1967-70

How did you come to work for Radio Sheffield?

I was there at the start in 1967 and stayed for three years, as a producer. I was working as a graduate trainee with Sheffield Newspapers, saw the ad and happily Michael Barton took me on. Being a Barnsley boy clearly helped!

Since leaving Radio Sheffield what else have you done?

I went on to make programmes in Manchester for the national 麻豆社 networks, then became the founding editor of File on Four. Later I managed the whole Manchester operation for 麻豆社 Radio and eventually I was appointed Controller Radio 4. After 10 years in that very hot seat I became a freelance media consultant working for many organisations her and abroad.

Proudest moment at Radio Sheffield?

Proudest moment was probably setting up and presenting the station's election coverage, though I would never have been a threat to Humphreys and Paxman.

Other good memories?

The overriding memory is of a small band of pioneers who supported each other through thick and thin to get the station launched and thriving. It was a very close-knit team.

What was your worst on air moment?

Bad moments were usually technical, crashing the pips etc, but the worst were during my stints playing listeners' requests. My wife said I was probably the worst DJ ever inflicted on the British public. I fear she was right.

During your time here, who was your favourite presenter?

Favourite presenter听 was Tony Capstick - a real son of the parish and a huge talent who made me laugh a lot.

Favourite place in South Yorkshire?

Apart from Barnsley and Nether Edge Hospital where my two children were born, the Derbyshire countryside was a wonderful place to escape to.

How do you spend your free time?

Travelling, walking, feasting on the cultural riches of London and looking after three granddaughters.

Looking back now, how would you sum up your Radio Sheffield experience?

A marvellous and indispensable introduction to the world of broadcasting.
