When the husky-voiced Annie Nightingale took to the airwaves in 1970, she not only broke Radio1's all-male code, but also became the first woman DJ in Britain. The former convent girl went on to expand her role as a music broadcaster, presenter and journalist and for 4 years hosted the Â鶹Éç's top ranking music show, The Old Grey Whistle Test.

The suburban girl turned glamorous DJ had an immense impact on the music industry and its listeners. She remains at the forefront of cutting-edge music with her 4am Sunday morning show one of Radio 1's most successful international shows via the internet.

In 1998 she was presented with the Woman of the Year Lifetime Achievement Award, and in 2000, 30 years after she joined Radio 1, Annie was presented with an MBE for services to broadcasting
