Ìý Mrs X Friday 28 June 2002 Ìý
Mrs X was sexually assaulted, strangled and beaten by her own husband. Her ribs were broken, both eyes blacked and a lung punctured in the attack. She spent four days in hospital, but his punishment was a community rehabilitation order as a string of character references led the judge to decide that the former Professor was a man of previously impeccable character.

Martha also speaks to the Solicitor General, Harriet Harman, about why she chose to take this case to appeal - a step which resulted in the retired professor being sent to prison for six months.
