Yesterday was Fathers Day and though men have been becoming fathers since the beginning of time, the rash of books and films about fatherhood might make you think this was a new phenomenon. So is becoming a father the trendiest thing a man can do?

Carole Ann Rice is a journalist and mother of two children under five. Phil Hogan is the father of four boys aged five to thirteen and a collection of his Observer columns on familly life is out in a new book, Parenting Made Difficult.
