Diana Krall began playing piano at the age of four. At 15 she was performing publicly at local venues, later winning a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee School of Music.
A later move to Los Angeles introduced her to some important mentors, and it was the late pianist Jimmy Rowles, who accompanied such greats as Billie Holliday and Ella Fitzgerald, who first convinced her that her deep, smoky voice was perfect for the jazz songs she loved.
Critics have since written that her vocals 'suggest a broken heart and a weary soul'.
