English Meadows 10ÌýJune 2008
An English meadow
The demise of the English meadow

In the last 50 years England has lost 98 per cent of its meadows as more land has been swallowed up by intensive farming. For the pastÌý25 years the writer Polly Devlin has been maintaining one of only seven meadows left in Somerset, which has now become an area of 'Special Scientific Interest'. Polly, with her husband Andy Garnett, has put together a book documenting the way a meadow changes through the seasons. Merilyn Harris joined Polly in a walk through the meadow to find out more about the project.

'A Year in the Life of an English Meadow' by Andy Garnett and Polly Devlin is published by Frances Lincoln Ltd, ISBN: 978-0-7112-2722-4.
