The Return of the Trenchcoat |
24 Feb 2010 |

|
Why is it such an icon?
Forever associated with the moody monochrome of film noir, the trenchcoat is a hardy perennial that is really having its moment this season - not just in the guise of an eminently practical raincoat, but also as an influence on dress and jacket shapes. John Galliano has said that Lauren Bacall is the inspiration for his recent trenches, but of course the trench is not primarily associated with Bacall, but with her co-star in 'Casablanca', Humphrey Bogart. So how did this coat for blokes make its way into women’s wardrobes, and what do the 2010 versions say about their wearers?ÌýTo discuss the trenchcoat, Jenni is joined byÌýClare Coulson, Fashion Features Director at Harper's Bazaar, and Professor Stella BruzziÌýfrom the Department of Film and Television Studies at the University of Warwick. |
