This year marks the two hundredth anniversary of the birth of one of Britain’s best loved writers - Elizabeth Gaskell. A series of events are underway to mark the event, culminating in her name being added to Poet’s Corner in Westminster Abbey. She was a contemporary of Dickens and a close personal friend of Charlotte Bronte. Her work has reached an ever growing public following hugely successful adaptations of her novels ‘Cranford’ and ‘North and South’ on the Â鶹Éç. But what is her place in the canon of English Literature and what of the woman herself?
