Modern Day Landladies 9th OctoberÌý2008
The landlady is back

The garrulous, meddlesome landlady was once an accepted part of British life but as Britain became richer and more people were able to buy their own homes the practice of taking in paying house guests largely disappeared. But more and more households are taking in lodgers in a bid to generate extra income during the current credit crisis, partly encouraged by the governments Rent a Room scheme which allows landladies to earn up to £4,250 a year tax free. Sheila is joined by Cassandra Jardine and Alex Knight to discussÌýthe pros and cons of sharing your home with a paying guest?
