Social interactions in virtual reality Simon faces his biggest challenge yet as presenter of Click On, when he听tries to chat up a virtual woman.听 In Professor Mel Slater鈥檚 lab at University College London, 听researchers are exploring how to make people engage with virtual characters, and whether those encounters and scenarios can be used to help people overcome real world difficulties such as social phobias.

Hermione Cockburn meets Dr John Crawford from Abertay University in Dundee, who is building a computer simulation which shows the spread of MRSA under different handwashing regimes. He hopes the results will point to the ways to minimise the impact of the disease.听

Data mining
Northamptonshire Police Force have been using data mining techniques 鈥� using computers to sort through vast amounts of data and pick out salient information 鈥� to help them make decisions about the circumstances under which it鈥檚 best to use their resources 鈥� when to use forensic teams, for example. However, there are fears about the circumstances under which data mining听could be听used as a tool when investigating crimes 鈥� Gareth Crossman from Liberty explains why.
