The Troubles, Biafra, and In Place of Strife
In 1969 British troops patrolled the streets of Northern Ireland. This was the start of the 'Troubles' that would last until the end of the Century.

In Africa the Biafran people were rebelling against the Nigerian government. They were also starving. Their plight began the development of international aid. Television brought their suffering into the living rooms of every industrialised nation.

Good news for the British economy came when test bores in the North Sea found oil off the shores of Scotland.

Neil Armstrong walked on the moon. The British proto-type of Concorde made her maiden voyage in 1969.

  • Became a naval pilot and fought in Korea
  • Joined NASA and became a US astronaut in 1962
  • Became the first person to walk on the Moon on 20 July 1969
  • Taught aerospace engineering at Cincinnati University
