The Chancellor of Germany
In 1933 Hitler became the German Chancellor. At the time many people in Britain thought this was a good thing for Germany. Churchill thought it a good thing for a strong man to lead the country. But soon there was much disquiet as Hitler's followers attacked Communists and Jews. They were arrested and imprisoned without trial. First concentration camp was opened at Dachau. Jews could not be teachers, doctors, lawyers, run businesses even hold German citizenship. Hitler withdrew from the disarmament conference in 1933 and from the League of Nations.

ADOLF HITLER (1889-1945)

  • Born in Austria
  • His father was a customs officer
  • Wanted to be a painter but his father wanted him to join the civil service
  • In 1913 he moved to Munich
  • Volunteered for military service and was wounded in the Great War
  • Founded the National Socialist German Workers' Party in 1920
  • The Party became more and more powerful and in 1933 Hitler was elected Chancellor of Germany
  • Became a dictator, oppressing all opposition
  • Instructed his men to hound Communists and Jews
  • His Nazi Brownshirts began to terrorize Jews
  • The concentration camp was opened at Dachau in 1933
  • Introduced the Gestapo (Secret Police)
  • His rule became more and more brutal
  • In 1938 he annexed Austria and the Second World War began
  • When it was obvious the war was lost, he married his long-time mistress Eva Braun and committed suicide
  • His dream of the Third Reich had been bloody but short-lived
  • Thirty million people lost their lives in the Second World War, 12 million of those were murdered in concentration camps
