The Death of Disraeli
In 1880 Gladstone became Prime Minister. Victoria was disappointed she only wanted Disraeli. She tried at first to call Lord Hartington who had been leader of the Liberals during Gladstone's retirement but in the end she had no choice but to call Gladstone.

Gladstone realised that British farmers were having hard times. They had experienced four bad harvests due to weather conditions. Gladstone replaced the Malt Tax with a tax increase on beer and Income Tax.

In 1881 Benjamin Disraeli died.

EXTRACT FROM QUEEN VICTORIA'S LETTER TO GENERAL SIR HENRY PONSONBY RE: GLADSTONE

"The Queen would sooner abdicate than send for or have any communication with that half-mad firebrand who would soon ruin everything and be a Dictator...others but herself may submit to his democratic rule, but not the Queen."
