'Strawberry Fields Forever'
The Beatles
The Beatles
Is Stawberry Fields Forever the best number two of all time? Does anybody really think that Engelbert Humperdinck's Release Me is a better song?

It could be many things ...a lullabye to my daughter, a soundtrack to an altered state, an insight into Lennon's mood, a study of experimental music recording, a time in history preserved for all.

Isn't it wonderful?Just perfect! It just has to be one of the most perfect records ever made. On the other hand , this brilliance has the downside as being probably the best ever advert for promoting the use of psychadelic drugs. Perfection has its price I suppose.

Probably the best pop record along with Penny Lane ever released.

David, Bedfordshire
Im only 14 years old, but I love the Beatles, and this just shows the power they had on the music industry. This is a brilliant song which single-handedly changed the music business forever, and how Englebert can be "a much better singer than all the Beatles (and the Stones) put together" is anyones guess.

Andrew Scully, Edinburgh
A good example of an "experimental pop song". It's too bad it got left off the Sgt Pepper album as it would have been a great addition to it.

Even by todays standards ,still a very strange song .way outside the realms of an accepted pop song ,even more so in 1967,this gave rock/pop the credibility it craved and ellivated it to a more artistic plane ,to paraphrase the songs author"no one i think was in his tree"

I lived in Allerton (Liverpool) and went to the same school as John Lennon, and played in the same areas, Calderstones Park and knew Strawberry Field home at about the same time as John did. When I first heard SFF and Penny Lane I was shattered: this was my home town and home region; I had even had my hair cut at the same place! The record is my all-time favourite and makes me wonder how things might have been had my naval father not had to move us from Liverpool to Plymouth all those years ago. Who knows, I might even have played with John or Paul as a young boy..... Let me take you down to Strawberry Field before it closes.

Engelbert is a much better singer than all the Beatles (and the Stones) put together.

Susan, London
Feel quite sad that Strawberry Fields is now closing. Not quite forever then. See http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/merseyside/4167379.stm

Brilliant song, years ahead of it's time. Check out the version on the anthology aswell.
