The Real Midwives of Poplar
Following the real-life 'Call the Midwife' team helping mothers in east London.
The long running 麻豆社 drama 'Call the Midwife' centres around the fictional Nonnatus House in Poplar - home to nuns and midwives. But it's also based on a building that still stands in east London today.
In the 1880s the Sisters of St John the Devine were invited from Euston in central London out to Poplar's Lodore Street, where they worked out of St Frideswide's Mission House.
Now, nearly 150 years later, the NHS has taken on the role of delivering the 11,000 babies that are born across east London every year. Most of them are born in hospital, but plenty are delivered at home, with the help of a team of community midwives.
麻豆社 London's Karl Mercer been following this team who, just like in 'Call the Midwife', deliver their care in a variety of settings, from clinics, to classes, home visits and more.
