Mum forced to clean son's grave in London Road Cemetery
Shirley Sutton's son Jonathan was stillborn in 1985.
Shirley Sutton's son Jonathan was stillborn in 1985. He has a memorial in the commemorative garden for those who have lost children at London Road Cemetery. Shirley regularly visits the memorial garden but over the last few months it has become overgrown. She's taken to cleaning and maintaining the garden herself.
Coventry City Council are responsible for the upkeep. In a statement, they said
鈥淥ur Bereavement Services work all year round on grounds maintenance, including cleaning graves and memorial plaques.
Unfortunately the wet weather earlier in the year caused delays which meant we were unable to complete as much spring grounds maintenance work at our six cemeteries as we would have wished by that time of year. Whilst family members can tend to a grave or clean memorial plaques if they would like to, it is not something we expect families to do themselves. Our teams work hard to make sure our cemeteries are kept to a high standard and we apologise for the delays to some maintenance work.鈥
