Disney's Marvel franchise is not short of superheroes, but it is in need of saving right now. In 2019, Avengers: Endgame alone took £2.1bn - a high point for the studio’s cinematic universe. But last year, its iron grip loosened. The confusingly named The Marvels opened to a franchise record low of £38m.

Is it fortunate timing then that Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool has fully joined the fold, alongside Australian Hugh Jackman's Wolverine? The Â鶹Éç's Zoe Ball spoke to both actors about the idea to bring Deadpool and Wolverine together in a comedy/sci-fi film.

"Myself, Shawn, Rhett, Paul, Zeb, these are all the writers, we're all working together and you'd think one of the five of us could come up with something viable...yeah we pitched a lot of different things, some things I still really quite like, some things were a little risky... yeah, pitch after pitch after pitch," says Reynolds.

"I was driving a car and I had this little epiphany of what I wanted to do and I was 'huh, I wanna make that movie', which in my head was Wolverine and Deadpool...and still is" says Jackman.

"Yep now it's Deadpool and Wolverine," says Reynolds.

Deadpool and Wolverine is the only Disney-backed MCU release this year.
