Ongar's heroic Titanic priest
The priest at St Helen's Catholic church in Chipping Ongar was one of the 1,500 passengers on the maiden voyage of RMS Titanic who perished after the ship sank.
In April 1912, the priest at St Helen's Catholic church in Chipping Ongar was one of the 1,500 passengers on the maiden voyage of RMS Titanic who perished after the ship collided with an iceberg.
Eyewitness accounts say Father Thomas Byles refused several offers to board a lifeboat, choosing to stay with passengers as the boat sank.
Margaret Payne from the church tells his story.
