UN concerned over Rafah as Israel eyes ground assault

UN humanitarian agency says there's "a breakdown of the rule of law in Rafah".

Gaza's Rafah city experienced heavy bombardment overnight Sunday into Monday, with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu insisting that a planned offensive there will go ahead.

US President Joe Biden told Mr Netanyahu on Sunday that a military operation in Rafah should not happen without measures to ensure the safety of civilians. There are about 1.4million Palestinians living in Rafah.

Georgios Petropoulos, Head of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, is in Rafah.

He tells Newsday: "I've never seen anything like this... [we need] constant communication and advocacy to keep borders open."
