Why Norway could ban foreign adoptions

Norway's main policy body is recommending a halt to all foreign adoptions in the country.

If approved by the government, the move could signal one of the most sweeping restrictions on foreign adoptions in Europe.

Last year, Norwegian investigative journalists published a report on an adoptions scheme. They alleged dozens of children had been illegally taken from their biological families in countries like South Korea and Ecuador and sold to adoptive families in Western Europe.

The government has set up a commission to investigate the allegations.

Christian Strand is a leading Norwegian journalist and advocate for transparency in foreign adoptions. Last year, he made a documentary called 鈥淕iven Away鈥 for Norwegian broadcaster NRK about his own adoption story.

He spoke to Weekend鈥檚 Luke Jones and explained what the authorities are investigating and why.
